It is the legal and professional foundation that allows a veterinarian to diagnose, treat, and prescribe medications for your animals. In simple terms, it means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The veterinarian knows you<\/strong> (the client) and has agreed to provide care for your animals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The veterinarian knows your animals<\/strong> because they have personally examined them and are familiar with their health, living conditions, and management.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You agree to follow the veterinarian\u2019s instructions<\/strong> for ongoing care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why an In-Person Exam Is Required<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your vet is not insisting on a visit to rack up farm call and exam fees \u2014 they care about safety, accuracy, and good medicine.\u00a0 Your veterinarian must see your animals in person to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Avoid misdiagnosis.<\/strong> Many health problems look alike from a description over the phone but require hands-on evaluation to tell apart.\u00a0 A misguided \u201cguess\u201d over the phone could kill your animal.\u00a0\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>SIDE NOTE: Most veterinarians recognize that experienced producers are very knowledgeable.\u00a0 We don\u2019t doubt that you know something is wrong and maybe even know how to fix it.\u00a0 Farmers are very capable!\u00a0 But client skill level does not negate the doctor\u2019s need to examine affected patients and apply their own medical expertise and judgement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ensure correct medication use.<\/strong> Drugs that work for one species may be dangerous\u2014or even deadly\u2014for another. In most states, it is <strong>illegal<\/strong> to prescribe or sell prescription drugs without first establishing this relationship. Ethically, it\u2019s our responsibility to make sure every treatment we recommend is safe, necessary, and tailored to your animals\u2019 needs.&nbsp; And to ensure proper dosing and withdrawal recommendations are followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You would never receive medication from your family physician without an exam and prescription first.\u00a0 In fact, repeated fishing for medication from human doctors and pharmacists &#8211; without a valid physical exam and current Rx &#8211; lands you on criminal drug-seeker watch lists! When an emergency strikes\u2014like a difficult calving, sudden illness, or injury\u2014having an established VCPR means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your veterinarian already knows your animals and setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They can legally and quickly prescribe medication or provide treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re more likely to get timely help when every minute
